Week 1: Getting Started

Small moments of movement and calm shape the rhythm of our days at KIBS.

Throughout March, we are focusing on Healthy Bodies & Calm Minds, exploring how movement, nutrition and balance support children’s learning and wellbeing.

Across the school – from Early Years to Primary – students experience wellbeing in different ways: through movement, shared activities and moments that help them feel energised and ready to learn. In the classroom, this can also include short brain breaks and simple coordination activities, especially before moments that require focus such as assessments or longer learning blocks.

This week, our Kindergarten students enjoyed a special sports lesson in the hall led by Ms. Viola, who combines her two passions: working with children and professional football. Through playful running, balancing and coordination exercises, students experienced how movement strengthens both the body and the joy of learning.

Another focus this month is healthy nutrition. During snack and lunch times we introduced a colour-based food concept, helping children, especially in Primary, begin to understand how different foods support their bodies. Through simple conversations, students explore how what we eat can influence energy, focus and wellbeing.

Even our youngest learners take part in preparing healthy snacks. In the Baby Room, children explored food through a simple activity – cutting bananas and preparing a healthy Znüni together.

Last week’s Fasnacht celebrations also brought a special activity: children prepared homemade candies without added sugar during a workshop together with our school leadership, Ms. Sutherland and Ms. Barbato, discovering that even treats can be made in a healthier way

Throughout the month, we will continue sharing small moments that show how movement, nutrition and joyful learning experiences come together in everyday life at KIBS. Next week, we will also share glimpses into our classrooms and show how short brain-break activities help children return to learning with renewed focus

💡 Good to know

  • Movement supports concentration and memory

  • Short movement breaks help the brain reset

  • Outdoor play strengthens wellbeing and resilience

Week 2: What helps children feel calm, focused and ready to learn?

Children learn best when their bodies are active, their minds are curious, and they feel emotionally safe.

As part of our March focus Healthy Bodies & Calm Minds, this week we explored how simple, calm activities can support children’s focus and readiness to learn throughout the school day.

Across the school, these short moments are part of the daily rhythm – before starting a task, ahead of a test, or whenever a pause helps children reset and refocus.

In Kindergarten and lower primary, children engaged in a range of coordination and fine motor activities, including tracing exercises, finger challenges and cross-body movements. These activities support hand control and early writing skills, while also helping children return to learning with greater focus and calm.

By using both sides of the body and crossing the midline, children strengthen coordination and activate communication between both hemispheres of the brain – a simple but powerful way to support attention and learning.

Alongside these classroom moments, our community came together for a special highlight: our annual Art Exhibition on 12 March. Across all departments, students shared their creative work, and as every year, the exhibition was a wonderful success.

These moments are part of everyday school life at KIBS, where wellbeing and learning are closely connected.

Week 3: What powers us?

How do children begin to understand how their bodies work and what gives them energy?

As part of our March focus Healthy Bodies & Calm Minds, students explored these ideas through hands-on experiences across different age groups.

In Grade 5, students carried out an experiment to investigate how different foods release energy. By observing how various foods burned, they saw that some released energy quickly, while others did so more slowly. This led to discussions about how the body uses food as fuel and how different nutrients support energy and focus.

With our younger learners, similar ideas were explored through movement and sensory experiences. In the Little Bees group, children moved through a simple cardboard maze, finding their way and exploring their environment. These experiences support coordination, spatial awareness and early problem-solving skills, while allowing children to learn at their own pace.

Snack time also remained an important part of the daily rhythm. With the introduction of the “snack train”, children experienced a calm and structured moment to enjoy their food together. This simple routine supports independence, encourages positive relationships with healthy food and creates space for shared, social experiences.

Across the school, these moments show how closely wellbeing and learning are connected in everyday life at KIBS.
