May at KIBS - Our Teachers, Our Heart
Week 1: Beyond the lesson
Teaching begins long before the lesson starts.
This week, we wanted to give a small insight into the many different roles teachers and teacher assistants take on throughout the day — from preparing classrooms in the early morning to welcoming children, supporting transitions, guiding learning, and creating spaces where children feel safe, supported, and inspired.
These small moments are often unseen, yet they play an important role in creating meaningful learning experiences and a positive environment for every child.
At the same time, many classes were preparing special Mother’s Day surprises with great care and excitement.
In Primary, students designed and created flowers for their mothers, carefully painting, decorating, and preparing them with love and creativity.
Our youngest learners explored nature through hands-on experiences by planting seeds and filling pots with soil, discovering how things grow through touch, movement, and exploration.

In Kindergarten, children prepared handmade bath salts for their mothers, carefully mixing, filling, and packaging them while engaging their senses and expressing care through creativity.
This week highlights that learning is not only about lessons, but also about relationships, preparation, creativity, and meaningful experiences shared together every day.

Week 2: Teachers as Learners
Learning becomes most meaningful when it is shared.
This week, we explored how learning often happens through interaction, curiosity, and connection — not only from teacher to child, but also the other way around. Through games, conversations, movement, and shared experiences, children stepped into the role of teachers themselves.
In Kindergarten, the children proudly taught their teachers how to play Lotti Karotti and Tic Tac Toe, explaining the rules, guiding the games, and supporting one another throughout the activities. These moments created opportunities for communication, confidence-building, and joyful collaboration.

On the playground, Ms. Catalina brought back Gummi Twist — a game many children used to play years ago and which is now slowly making a comeback. Together with the students, she rediscovered the game through movement, laughter, and shared excitement, showing how traditions and connections continue across generations of students.

Our Primary Principal, Ms. Sutherland, also joined the students in learning a hand-clapping game together, reminding us that some of the most meaningful learning moments happen through openness, participation, and shared joy.
In Daycare, the week continued under the theme of learning through play. The children explored animals through a variety of sensory and hands-on experiences — feeding them, freeing them from ice, guessing animal sounds, and discovering different textures and materials connected to the topic.

Our baby group explored the beauty of spring by discovering and collecting spring flowers outdoors, experiencing nature through movement, observation, and sensory exploration. This week reminded us that learning is not always about having the answers. Sometimes, it is about listening, exploring together, and being open to learning from one another.

Week 3: Appreciation & Connection
Great teachers do much more than teach — they inspire, support, encourage, and create environments where children feel safe, seen, and motivated to learn.
This week, we invited families and children to share small “thank you” messages for our team. Together, these messages became a beautiful appreciation poster celebrating the people who help shape everyday life at KIBS. The thoughtful words reminded us once again how important care, connection, and relationships are within a school community.
In Upper Primary, students were visited by a firefighter, who spoke to them about emergency situations and fire safety through practical and engaging real-life examples. These experiences help children connect learning to the world around them in meaningful and lasting ways.
At the same time, our Grade 5 and 6 students continued their bike sports unit together with Mr. Standen. Through movement, coordination, and shared activities, they strengthened not only their physical skills, but also confidence and teamwork.

This week reminded us that meaningful learning happens when children feel supported, encouraged, and connected to real experiences.
Week 4
As our month-long theme Our Teachers, Our Heart comes to a close, this week gave us the opportunity to reflect on the people, experiences, and relationships that make our school community so special.
Throughout the week, students shared their thoughts on what makes a great teacher. Their responses reminded us that great teachers are often remembered not only for what they teach, but for how they make children feel — supported, encouraged, understood, and inspired.
As part of this celebration, students recognised teachers who make a difference in their daily lives by presenting them with special sashes and messages such as “This is for a teacher who inspires you.”These heartfelt moments gave children the opportunity to express their appreciation and gratitude in a meaningful and personal way.

To continue the celebration, Ms. Sutherland, our Primary Principal, surprised the teaching team with Superstar Teacher posters, recognising the dedication, care, and commitment they bring to KIBS each day. Several students also helped prepare and present the posters, making the gesture even more meaningful. Together, these moments reflected the spirit of appreciation and connection that has been at the heart of this month’s theme.
With the arrival of the summer weather, swimming lessons took place outdoors last Friday, giving students the opportunity to enjoy movement and learning in a different environment.

Our Grade 6 students embarked on their graduation trip to London, creating lasting memories together as they prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.

Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students celebrated a fantastic achievement. By earning more than 20,000 reading points, they won the Antolin Reading Challenge and enjoyed a well-deserved pizza party and ice cream in the courtyard to celebrate their hard work, perseverance, and love of reading.
