February at KIBS - Friendship & Belonging

Week 1: Building Belonging

At KIBS, friendship grows where children feel safe, seen, and supported.
When children feel they belong, they are more willing to try, to connect, and to care for one another.

For our youngest learners, belonging begins with trust – familiar voices, warm gestures, and steady routines that create a sense of safety.
As children grow, this sense of belonging develops into friendship: learning to work together, to listen, to respect differences, and to find their place within the community.

Friendship grows through everyday experiences. Children move between moments of closeness, changing relationships, and shared problem-solving. At KIBS, we support these processes with care: we give time, listen closely, name emotions, and guide children as they learn how to navigate relationships in age-appropriate ways.

This month, we’re sharing glimpses of these everyday moments, children playing and learning together, small acts of kindness, calm transitions, and times when children support one another.

At KIBS, we don’t just teach children — we grow a community

💡 Good to know 💡

Friendship is a core part of social-emotional learning at KIBS. From an early age, children learn to navigate everyday social situations through age-appropriate guidance.

In Preschool and Kindergarten, Kelso’s Choices supports children in expressing their needs and setting boundaries respectfully during play.

In Primary, students build on these skills through weekly PSHE lessons and guided support from our SEL coach, exploring empathy, respect, and what it means to be a good friend. Research shows that intentional support in social-emotional learning strengthens peer relationships, emotional wellbeing, and engagement at school.

Week 2: Friendship in Action

This week, friendship and belonging looked a little different across Primary — yet the heart of the experience remained the same.

For some of our students, Ski Week offered shared challenges and new experiences in the mountains. Encouraging one another, celebrating small successes, and navigating unfamiliar situations together strengthened not only skills, but also trust and connection.

Back on campus, other classes explored community in a different way during Fasnacht celebrations and project-based activities. Preparing together, creating together, and sharing moments of laughter reminded us that belonging often grows in shared traditions and collaborative work.

Whether on the slopes or in the classroom, this week showed that friendship is built through shared experiences — through supporting one another, stepping outside comfort zones, and feeling part of something larger than oneself. At KIBS, belonging is not tied to a place, but to the way we grow together.

Week 3: Growing Together

This week, community took different forms across Primary, yet the heart of it remained the same: supporting one another and growing together.

For our Grade 6 students, the focus was on intensive preparation for their upcoming Gymi entrance exams. In concentrated study sessions and shared discussions, it became clear how important encouragement, trust, and mutual support are during demanding times. Belonging here means knowing you are not walking the path alone.

At the same time, the rest of Primary transformed the school into a creative stage. During Play in a Week, students worked in mixed-age groups to create theatre performances inspired by the Winter Olympics. Through themes of sportsmanship, fairness, and cooperation between countries, they brought moments of fair play to life.

The week concluded with performances for our Little Stars — a joyful moment of pride and shared celebration.

Whether in the classroom or on stage, this week showed that friendship and belonging grow when children lift each other up and strive together.

Week 4: Voices & Reflection

As February comes to a close, we’re sharing a few voices from our community: reflections on friendship and belonging at KIBS.

“It means a lot to us that even at this young age, our child already feels safe and part of a small community.”

- Daycare parent

«Indem ich das Lachen meiner Tochter sehe, zeigt es mir, dass das Wohlbefinden das ist und mein Kind sich geborgen fühlt»

- Little Stars Mutter

Children, teachers, and parents describe what friendship and belonging mean to them, in the classroom, in everyday school life, and when parents think about KIBS.

Students share in their own words how they experience and nurture friendships.Together, these voices remind us that learning flourishes where children feel seen, valued, and that they truly belong.
